Two types of tourist taxes in Barcelona
Did you know that staying at a hotel or Airbnb in Barcelona involves two different tourist taxes?
The tourist taxes charged in Barcelona are made up of the following:
- Catalonia Tourist Tax (IEET)
: A regional tax set by the government of Catalonia - Barcelona City Surcharge
: An additional tax introduced independently by the City of Barcelona
This system clearly results in a double charge for travelers.
The Barcelona City Surcharge was created to respond to issues caused by the rapid increase in tourism, including congestion and dissatisfaction among local residents.
In recent years, these tourist taxes have been gradually raised, and it has been officially decided that from October 2025 onward, visitors will be charged up to 15€ per person per night.
Below is a summary of Barcelona’s tourist taxes as they will apply from October 2025. Please use it as a reference when planning your trip.
Tourist Tax in Barcelona from October 2025
| Accommodation Type | Catalonia Tourist Tax | Barcelona City Surcharge | Surcharge Total Tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-star hotels | €3.50 | €11.50 | €15.00 |
| 4-star hotels | €1.70 | €9.30 | €11.00 |
| Tourist apartments such as Airbnb | €2.25 | €10.25 | €12.50 |

For example, if you stay in an Airbnb for more than 30 days, the taxable amount will be €12.50 × 7 nights = €87.50.
In Barcelona, many Airbnb listings offer discounts for long stays of 31 or 32 nights or more.
You can often find a private room with a shared kitchen and bathroom for around 150,000 yen per month when booking for 31 nights.
Being able to stay in the center of one of the world’s top tourist cities for about 150,000 yen a month may only be possible for a limited time.
Barcelona has already decided to ban short-term tourist rentals, including Airbnb, starting in 2028.
