How to Withdraw Cash from a Vietnam ATM: Fees and Easy Steps
In Vietnam, some shops, local restaurants, and services do not accept credit cards, so it is a good idea to carry enough cash with you.
Cash is especially important for massage shops. Unless the staff clearly say no tip is needed, it is polite to give a tip of around 100,000 VND.
For this reason, having cash on hand is necessary.
In this page, I explain how to use a Vietnam ATM, what fees to expect, and how to withdraw cash smoothly while traveling in Vietnam.

Vietnam has the highest motorbike traffic in the world! You cannot avoid the risk of traffic accidents.
Furthermore, travelers in Vietnam are almost 100% likely to experience stomach upset during their stay, so be careful.

How to Withdraw Cash from a Vietnam ATM
In this example, we use a VPBank ATM.
However, the process is almost the same for all Vietnam ATM machines, so you can follow these steps at most banks in Vietnam.
First, insert your credit card into the Vietnam ATM and choose the language.

Next, enter your PIN number and tap “OK” to continue.

Next, select “WITHDRAWAL” to proceed with cash withdrawal.

Next, select “CREDIT CARD.”
Even if you are using a debit card, you can still choose “CREDIT CARD” when withdrawing cash from a Vietnam ATM.

Next, choose the amount of Vietnamese dong you want to withdraw.

At a Vietnam ATM, the maximum amount you can withdraw in one transaction is usually 5,000,000 VND or 3,000,000 VND, depending on the bank.
Each withdrawal comes with an ATM fee of 55,000 VND or 120,000 VND, so please keep this in mind when choosing the amount.
*This information is for 2025, fees will increase every year.
After selecting the withdrawal amount, a confirmation screen like the one below will appear.

The ATM will ask whether you want to receive a receipt.
Simply tap “OK” to continue.
That’s it. The cash withdrawal process is now complete.

Don’t forget to take your cash from the ATM.
What to Be Careful About When Using a Vietnam ATM

When you search for Vietnam ATM reviews on Google, you will find many reports of cards being swallowed by ATM machines. This happens more often than you might expect.
There are also cases where an ATM error occurs, no cash comes out, but the withdrawal still appears on the card statement.
Unfortunately, not all Vietnam ATM machines are well maintained.
I stayed in Da Nang, and although ATMs are easy to find around the city, many machines look poorly managed. Some ATMs make you wonder if they are safe to use.
These types of ATMs may also carry a higher risk of skimming, so it is better to avoid them.
When using a Vietnam ATM, keep the following points in mind:
- Check Google reviews and choose an ATM with good ratings
- Avoid machines that look poorly maintained
- Use ATMs located inside or next to a bank branch whenever possible
*Bank-attached ATMs make it easier to get help if your card is swallowed or an error occurs
Also note that some ATMs run out of cash, especially on weekends or Monday mornings. In these cases, withdrawals may not be possible.
For smoother cash withdrawals, it is best to use a Vietnam ATM between Tuesday and Friday, preferably in the morning.
