How to Get from Warsaw Airport to the City Center: Bolt or Train?
Warsaw Chopin Airport is the main international gateway to Poland’s capital city.
There are two popular ways to get from the airport to the city center:
- Take a Bolt taxi
- Use public transportation (train, metro, or tram)
If you are traveling with several people or carrying a lot of luggage, Bolt is usually the most convenient option. If you are traveling alone and want to save money, public transportation is the better choice.
In this guide, I will explain both options based on my own experience.

How to Get to the City Center by Bolt
In Poland, you can use the ride-hailing app Bolt.
However, using Bolt at Warsaw Airport is slightly different from using Uber or Bolt in many other cities.
At Warsaw Airport, you do not request a car to your current location. Instead, you must go to the dedicated Bolt pickup area inside the airport.
After arriving, leave the arrivals hall and walk to the Bolt pickup zone located directly in front of the terminal.
Once you reach the pickup area, open the Bolt app and request your ride as usual.
You will then see a Pickup Code on the screen.
Show this code to the Bolt driver when boarding.
Unlike a typical ride-hailing system, drivers are not assigned to individual passengers. Instead, passengers are served in order from the waiting line at the pickup area.
- Open the Bolt app.
- Enter your destination.
- Request a ride.
- Wait at the dedicated Bolt pickup area.
- Board the vehicle and show your Pickup Code to the driver.
This means the airport uses a queue system rather than the usual model where a driver comes directly to your location.
*If you wait outside the designated pickup area, no Bolt driver will come to collect you.
The fare to central Warsaw is usually around 30–60 PLN, depending on traffic and demand.
How to Get to the City Center by Public Transport
If you want to use public transportation, leave the arrivals hall and walk to the right side of the terminal.
You will see a McDonald’s. Continue past it and go down the stairs.
There you will find the ticket machines.
There are only two machines, so there may be a line.
However, this is not a major problem because tickets can also be purchased from machines inside the train. In other words, you can buy your ticket after boarding.
From the ticket machines, walk left and continue to the platform.
Then simply board the train.
How to Buy a Ticket in Warsaw
Warsaw ticket machines accept credit cards.
*During my one-month stay in Warsaw, I never needed to use cash.
Public transportation in Warsaw uses a unified ticket system. The same ticket can be used on trains, buses, trams, and the metro.
Depending on the ticket type, the validity period is usually 20 minutes or 75 minutes.
A trip from the airport to Warsaw Downtown station costs approximately 3.40 PLN.
Now, let’s look at the ticket machine screen and go through the ticket purchase process step by step.
First, if necessary, tap the flag icon in the top-right corner of the screen to change the display language. To switch to English, tap the 🇬🇧 flag.
Next, tap the “If you want to buy a paper ticket” button on the left side of the screen.
Then, select the type of ticket you want to purchase. In this case, I chose “20-MINUTE TICKETS” because it seemed possible to reach the city center within 20 minutes.
You will then see a screen like the one below.
This screen explains that if you purchase a Zone 1 and Zone 2 ticket valid for 20 minutes, you can use public transportation as many times as you like within 20 minutes after the ticket has been activated.
After reviewing the information, tap “CONTINUE”.
Next, tap “ADULT”.
Then, select the number of tickets you would like to purchase and tap the checkmark.
Finally, the total price will be displayed. If everything looks correct, complete the purchase.
Your ticket purchase is now complete.
Important: Validate Your Ticket or Risk a Fine
Many visitors do not know this rule.
Warsaw’s trains, buses, and trams use a ticket validation system. If you fail to validate your ticket, you may receive a fine of around 150–200 PLN, even if you already purchased a ticket.
An unvalidated ticket is treated as if you are traveling without a valid ticket.
- Ticket purchased at a station or platform machine
→ Must be validated immediately after purchase. - Ticket purchased inside the vehicle
→ Already activated. No validation is required.
Because Warsaw tickets are time-based, inspectors may treat late validation as fare evasion.
To avoid problems, validate your ticket as soon as required.
If you are unsure about the process, buying your ticket inside the train is often the easiest option.
